Father's Day messages & captions

Short, warm and sometimes silly messages for a card, a text or a caption. Copy one as it is, or change a word so it sounds like you.

Finding the right words for Dad is harder than it looks. Below are 24 Father's Day messages and captions in six groups: from a son, a daughter, the kids and a wife or partner, plus funny ones and short captions for a photo. Copy any of them as they are, or change a word or add a detail only you know. The message that sounds most like you is the one he'll remember.

How to write a Father's Day message that sounds like you

The best messages are short and specific. A few things make a big difference:

  • Start with one real memory. The fishing trip, the late-night lift home or the terrible joke he told at your wedding says more than a general line about being the best dad.
  • Keep it to two or three sentences. A short message gets read, remembered and often kept.
  • Use words you would say out loud. If you would never call him a hero in real life, don't put it in a card.
  • Add a name or an inside joke. Swapping "Dad" for what you actually call him makes any message on this page personal.
  • Finish with thanks or love. "Thank you" and "I love you" are enough to close almost any message.

What to write in a card, a text or a caption

The right length depends on where the message is going. For a card, two or three sentences in your own handwriting beat a long printed verse. For a text, one or two lines sent early in the day feel warm without being heavy. For a photo caption, keep it to a handful of words, like the ones in our short captions list above.

If the man you're writing to is a stepdad, grandad, uncle or another father figure, the messages here still work. Swap in the name you use for him and keep the thanks.

When is Father's Day?

The date depends on the country. In Australia and New Zealand, Father's Day is on the first Sunday in September. In the US, UK and Canada, it falls on the third Sunday in June. Other countries have their own dates, so check your local calendar if you're writing to someone overseas.
